Jay Cutler has a redneck receiver
Oh, the pressure!
Former Vandy standout and 2006 No. 1 NFL draft pick Jay Cutler makes his first pro start Sunday.
He’ll lead the Denver Broncos against the Seattle Seahawks, and adding even more pressure, it’s the nationally-televised Sunday night game.
Seems Jay is turning to Nashville connections to chill out before the big game.
He showed up for country singer Gary Allan’s show a few days ago in Denver.
That’s when it turned into football fantasy camp. Gary just so happened to have a football on his tour bus. And Jay apparently just so happened to be in a generous mood.
So Jay hurled a long ‘un to Gary’s steel player, C.J. Eudeen. Pass complete — or at least that’s how Gary’s peeps are tellin’ it.
No word if Jay started plucking a steel guitar.
BlackHawk remembers Van
Country trio Blackhawk (Goodbye Says It All) will make a $15,000 donation next week to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in memory of their former member and co-founder, Van Stephenson, who died in 2001 from skin cancer.
The group set up a memorial fund in Van’s name when he passed away. The $15,000 will be used for melanoma research.
The two other guys, Henry Paul and Dave Robbins, have taken on a new member, Anthony Crawford, and they’ve now got a deal with newly-formed Rust Records.
21+ ladies, wanna be a Coyote?
There’s an open audition tomorrow in Nashville for women 21+ who want to be on CMT’s The Ultimate Coyote Ugly Search.
For the uninitiated, they look for dancing and/or singing sassy bartenders for the Coyote Ugly bar chain, which has a location on Second Avenue here in town.
Last year’s winner, Kassie Miller, happens to be a Nashville girl, and the show exposure helped her get an indie record label deal here in town.
All ya gotta do is show up between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday at the Doubletree Hotel, 315 4th Ave. N.
Bon Jovi rocks MuzikMafia
Tuesday night’s MuzikMafia show was slated as the big musical coming out for the Johns.
John Rich of Big & Rich is trying to orchestrate a big (& rich) comeback for veteran John Anderson (Seminole Wind), and Tuesday’s show at Mercy Lounge provided the first public stage for the new dynamic duo.
But there was also plenty of buzz about the arrival of two unannounced guests, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora.
The two have been in and out of town working on a new album with high-powered Music Row producer Dann Huff (Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood).
Bon Jovi now has plenty of Nashville buddies, including Big Kenny of Big & Rich.
Seems Richie wasn’t feeling very well, but that didn’t stop him from hitting stage and jamming with his Music City pals.
Cider, carols and me, oh my!
The Hope Clinic for Women helps women deal with pregnancy and other issues, and now you can help the group that helps others.
Check out the Cider Carols event from 7 to 9 tonight (Thursday) at Rocketown near the arena, at 401 Sixth Ave. S. Bunches of singers-songwriters will lead Christmas carols and then there’s my fave — cider and desserts.
Reunion Records recording artist Brandon Heath along with local independent artists Kathleen Carnali, Jason Catron, Dustin Overbeek, and Terry Thompson will be leading the Christmas carols.
I’m honored to have been asked to host the event.
I think I landed the gig because of some abdominal similarities to Santa….
New York Dolls Alive and In Town!
The legendary New York Dolls are playing a gig at City Hall, proof that Nashville isn’t just a country town! I’m talking the “punkist of the punk!” The New York Dolls started the genre in the early 70’s, before the term even existed. Their influence of style and sound would be felt for generations to come.
The reborn glam/punk band is whittled down to only two of five members from the infamous ‘72-’73 lineup, singer David Johansen (AKA Buster Poindexter) and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain. The rest have passed away.
In the 70’s the New York Dolls scared record companies with their cross-dressing, excessive drug use and wild shows, but today the band’s two albums remain among the most popular cult records in rock & roll history. More than 35 years later, through break-ups, solo careers and deaths the New York Dolls rock on!
The Supersuckers are one of several opening bands for the New York Dolls Thursday night at City Hall. Former Reverend Horton Heat drummer, Scott Churilla is now part of the group.
Nashville’s taking over Hollywood!
Or at least getting some of that Tinsletown cake.
The Hollywood Reporter just released it’s annual list of 10 highest-paid actresses, and new Nashvillian Nicole Kidman – thanks to her role in upcoming movie The Invasion – tops the list at $16-17 million.
Oh, but that’s not all. Reese Witherspoon, who grew up here and has been living here recently, finished No. 2 with $15 million.
There’s even a Nashville connection to No. 3, Renee Zellweger, who was married for a short time to Kenny Chesney.
OK, no matter how much I stretch it, I can’t think of any more Nashville connections to the rest of the top 10, but here they are.
No. 4 - Drew Barrymore, $15 million
No. 5 - Cameron Diaz, $15 million.
No. 6 - Halle Berry, $14 million.
No. 7 - Charlize Theron, $10 million.
No. 8 - Angelina Jolie, $10 million.
No. 9 - Kirsten Dunst, $8 million-$10 million.
No. 10 - Jennifer Aniston, $8 million.
ABC/YouTube picks local band
A Franklin high school German teacher cut classes today, but his students — and his bosses — think he has a pretty good excuse.
In addition to teacher German at Centennial High School, Patrick Rickelton plays keyboards and guitar for new Nashville indie rock band Greenland.
And that band was one of several that won in a nationwide battle of the bands contest put on by popular Web site YouTube.com. And the winners were announced and shown this morning on ABC’s Good Morning America.
Greenland won “best song” for its tune The Way It Is.
And many of Mr. Rickelton’s German students were gathered in front of televisions at Centennial High this morning to watch.
The first reaction — Yeah, Mr. Rickelton! Their second reaction — Can you believe Diane Sawyer is blocking our view of Mr. Rickelton?!?!?
A shout-out to the other guys in the band, Tres Crow, Matt Goetz, Michael Green and Evan James.
More tonight on News 2 at 10.
‘Borat’ splits Pam & Kid Rock?
Some strange reports out of the New York tabloids about what may have ended the Kid Rock-Pamela Anderson four-month marriage.
The tabloids blame Borat – the movie, not the fictional Khazikstan TV reporter.
The rumor is that Pam and Kid Rock were at a private Hollywood screening with some movie makers, and keep in mind that Borat goes across the country to meet Pam.
Supposedly a scene that refers to the infamous Pamela-Tommy Lee sex tape set off Kid Rock.
The reports say Kid Rock loudly called Pam a, uh, woman of ill repute. He also is reported to have said some other unflattering things about his bride.
Those same reports say Pam’s friends said that was the beginning of the end.
No response from the stars’ camps.
