Amy Grant’s Young Backup Singers!
Tonight at Lipscomb University’s second annual Lighting of the Green ceremony, about 300 young voices will have the privilege of singing backup with recording star Amy Grant. The concert will feature Lipscomb University’s chorus and jazz ensembles along with separate and combined performances from David Lipscomb Campus School’s high school, middle school and elementary school choruses.
You are invited to the free community concert tonight at 5:30 on the Burton Building lawn. You are encouraged to bring a can of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank! I hear Santa will be there!
‘Lion King’ is biggest TPAC show ever
Disney’s The Lion King closes here in eight more (sold-out) shows, and when it does it will have made TPAC history.
The six-week run grossed nearly $6.9 million, an all-time TPAC record.
It surpasses the record set in spring 1994, when a six-week run of Phantom of the Opera brought in nearly $6.6 million.
And The Lion King did so with fewer performances, 46 shows versus 54 for Phantom.
Some 36 of the 46 Lion King shows here were sold out.
Cash leaves a song for Porter
About 15 years ago, Johnny Cash, touring in Europe, turned to a band member by the name of Marty Stuart and handed him an envelope.
Inside was a song Johnny had written, called Committed to Parkview, a reference to the rehab center with which Marty and Opry legend Porter Wagoner had had some experience.
“Give this to Porter,” Johnny told Marty.
Marty put away that envelope, brought it back to the States with him and, well, forgot about it.
About six months ago, Marty was thinking of his late friend Johnny, and that envelope popped into his head.
“I went through tons of stuff, tearing through piles and piles to find that thing,” Marty told me.
He found it, and now Marty and Porter are in a Music Row studio cutting it.
Porter, just recovered from a nearly-fatal abdominal aneurysm, has found an indie L.A. label, Anti Records, home to artists like Tom Waits and Neko Case.
So he and Marty are making music.
“The Wagon Master is back,” Marty declared, adding that Porter’s new album, out in May, will be called The Wagon Master.
Two Johns, one Gretchen tomorrow
You may or may not know that MuzikMafia has fairly regular Tuesday night gigs at Mercy Lounge and elsewhere around town.
And you know that Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy, Two-Foot Fred and others are part of this merry band of Music Row mayhem makers. But you never know who’s gonna show to a MuzikMafia show.
Well, for tomorrow, there actually is something of a lineup announced beforehand.
Recently, country veteran John Anderson (Seminole Wind) has hooked up with John Rich of Big & Rich, so John Anderson will make his MuzikMafia debut tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9 p.m. at Mercy Lounge.
And yes, Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson also will be there, so it should be an interesting night.
“We want to welcome John into the MuzikMafia family with a big bang!” John Rich said in a statement. And that could mean anything coming from Mr. Rich.
So get on it!
‘Tis the season, for free doughnuts!
Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell is no novice, folks.
He knows what the peeps want, and he’s delivering, Thursday at 5 p.m. at the new public square by the courthouse.
That’s when the official Nashville Christmas tree lighting is, so yes, there’ll be a tree and some city officials.
And we’re in Nashville, so we’ll have a country singer, relative newcomer Danielle Peck. Danielle (Findin’ a Good Man) will sing one of her songs and, of course, a Christmas carol, TBA.
But here comes the stroke of genius.
The mayor will offer free coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts for all who show.
Good tidings indeed!
Kid Rock, Pamela Anderson Split
Pamela Anderson’s rep tells People magazine that Pamela filed for divorce from Kid Rock last week.
“It wasn’t a happy Thanksgiving,” the rep said.
Some of Kid Rock’s Nashville friends tell me today that they were not shocked, that the couple had been having some difficulties.
What is surprising is that Kid Rock seemed to be determined to work things out.
He and Pamela just bought a $12 million estate in Malibu, and Kid Rock just took his child from Detroit to California to live in the couple’s house.
Kid Rock and Pamela got married in July in St. Tropez, and the next month, they took vows in a rowdy midnight ceremony at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge on Lower Broadway in Nashville.
A Nashville judge officiated, but there is a question as to whether there was actually a marriage certificate filed in court here.
This is the second time Kid Rock and Pamela were a couple but the first time they got married.
Kid Rock, Pamela Anderson split
Pamela Anderson confirms on her Web site that she filed for divorce from Kid Rock last week.
“Yes, it’s true. Unfortunately impossible,” she wrote.

The two also spent some significant time in a West End Avenue condo that Kid Rock bought last year.

Divorce papers were filed in Los Angeles, with Pamela asking for a fair split of marital assets. She also asked that Kid Rock pay all attornies’ fees.
This is the second time Kid Rock and Pamela were a couple but the first time they got married.
An irony: GQ magazine just came out with a photo spread that talked all about what a happy couple the two are.
Celeb’s Fight Shopping Crowds Also
Did you deal with the mayhem at the mall this weekend? I had to go out to Cool Springs to cover a story at Best Buy. Apparently several angry shoppers camped out overnight and got cut in line.
While I was there I spotted Kimberly Roads of Little Big Town! I guess she wasn’t afraid of braving the crowd for some electronic discounts! It then took me thirty minutes to make it across the street to the Cool Springs Galleria…unbelievable!
Tom Waits Tribute!
Over a dozen of Nashville’s local rockers are paying tribute to one of my favorite musicians tonight! Get Behind A Mule: An evening of Tom Waits Music will get started at nine O’clock at The Basement.
Tom Waits has a trademark growl, a distinctive writing style and the ability to meld pre-rock styles of music. His music can be classified as folk, blues, jazz, Vaudeville and sometimes industrial!
Despite having little radio play as a performer, Tom Waits has built a cult following and influenced many of today’s performers. His most famous songs are best recognized by other artists, like Bruce Springsteen who does Jersey Girl and Rod Stewart who performs Downtown Train . Tom waits has also worked as a composer for movies and musical plays and as a supporting actor in films!
Tom Waits doesn’t tour often, but he did make a special stop at the Ryman Auditorium earlier this year and the Nashville show sold out within minutes! I had the honor of scoring a ticket last minute! If you haven’t had a chance to see the man himself perform, you can at least check out others impersonate the living legend. The best part of all…proceeds benefit Toys for Tots!
Turkey Toss
Did you ever wonder what folks do after stuffing their bellies with all that turkey? How about tossing it? No… not as in up-chuck, but throwing it! Over a dozen folks took turns tossing a frozen turkey up-hill on Demonbreun Street Thursday night. Some guys stretched to get warmed up for the turkey toss, while others shared their secret concrete slide move. The guy who threw it the furthest took home $200!
