Review: Lou Diamond is un-shiny
So lots of you were thinking: La Bamba Lou Diamond Phillips, the Young Guns dude, in an old-school musical? How can that work?
Well, according to my pal and WRKN colleague Tiani Jones, uh, it didn’t.
Phillips plays King Arthur, a.k.a., the lead character, King Arthur, in Camelot.
And — how do we say this delicately? — Tiani cringed every time he opened his mouth.
It wasn’t just the singing, which, compared to the other cast members, well, wasn’t enough comparable. Phillips was altogether on a different level.
And the acting? Phillips is definitely accomplished as an actor, but musical theater doesn’t seem to be bag, baby.
Tiani noticed that several small groups of folks left during the first half, and another big group of folks left at intermission.
Having said that, Phillips did pull off his funny lines, and the audience at times enjoyed his presence and other parts of the play.
You can check it out for yourself through Sunday at TPAC.
