Gene Hackman is a little grumpy at the Nashville library
Gene Hackman (Hoosiers) has recently declared he is dropping the acting thing to be a full-time author. But it looks like he might enjoy writing the books better than pushing them.
Hackman was at the main downtown library this evening with Daniel Lenihan, his co-author on Civil War book Escape from Andersonville.
And dozens and dozens of fans showed, and many said they sensed Hackman was really ready to get out of there.
He seemed OK with autographing books, but Hackmans wasn’t thrilled about posing for pics. Hackman would keep his head down and say, “Count to three and then I’ll look up.”
Really?
To be fair, Hackman also had many charming moments as well.
But overall, he may have left some fans with a negative impression. Our photographer, Carlos, overheard one woman say to another, “He wasn’t very nice, was he?”

I just saw Gene Hackman having a meal at an eating establishment near the public library. A fan came up to him and asked him for his autograph during dinner, and he was quite pleasant and signed the autograph. No grumpiness then.

Ok- picture your grandpa … he’s nice, he’s funny but yet he’s serious as well. That’s Gene Hackman. Gene and Daniel talked about the book, read some from the book, took questions from the audience about the book … and in the means, made a few jokes concerning the book & his co-author Daniel. Now when it came to the signing - the only problem I had was, he was being rushed. Instead of taking his time with everyone, he rushed and was being rushed. The handler said,
“keep up with your books” … He was nice to me, except he was rushed for no reason. If people take time out of their lives for you, then you should at least do the same for them. It’s called respect. To me he showed the up-most respect. And after today, he gained my respect. What a swell guy. I hope he comes back here for another signing.

I’m with the others…. I was at the library last night and not once got the impression Gene Hackman was “grumpy”. To the contrary, he seemed like a very “regular guy” and as personable as one can be with handlers rushing him along.
That being said, I found the audience somewhat embarassing. The questions asked were uninteresting and often similar. More people were interested in seeing the actor than actually discussing his novel.
For once I would love to see any Nashville audience actually come up with interesting questions to whomever may be willing to take them on.
