Jordin Sparks, Franklin Graham and others honor Smitty

Michael W. Smith’s place in this world Sunday night was being feted by all sort of singing stars at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

The Nashville Choir held its annual “A Light for the City” event, and decided to honor the Christian artist’s 25 years in the biz as part of it.

It looked like an American Idol reunion: Winner Jordin Sparks and Melinda Doolittle both were backing vocalists for Smitty earlier in their careers. And fellow Idol alum Phil Stacey has the same management as Smitty, so what the heck?

Stacey did a patriotic number in his sailor outfit that brought down the house. And Jordin and Melinda sang beautifully.

Sparks said she met him a few years ago after winning some sort of contest. She ended up going to his house and sang Amazing Grace while Smitty played piano. And Jordin and Smitty’s daughter bonded. So Jordin went on the road with him a year later.

“Michael’s done so much for me. Helping me overcome stage fright, and helping me do better on the stage and going on tour for him,” she told me. “His family has taken my family completely under their wings and accepts us for who we are.”

Also appearing for Smitty:

Bill Gaither, Ricky Skaggs, Micahel Tait, Franklin Graham, Amy Grant and Wynonna.

I just received this through a Google alert for Phil Stacey. I will assure you that Phil was not invited to honor Michael just because he happens to have the same management. Melinda Doolittle has that same management as well. What is wrong with having some Idols present? All 3 have proven to be great artists. Phil has said at the Dove Awards, in a tribute to Michael, that he is a fan of his. Phil was music minister and worship leader before Idol, so I am sure that he has performed several of Michael’s songs in church. And the patriotic song he performed was Michael’s own “There She Stands,” written after 9/11. They could not have chosen a better person to sing it than Phil himself, who was Musician Third Class in the Navy, then was named Mass Communication Specialist Third Class in the Navy Reserves. So a patriot singing a patriotic song is very appropriate, especially when he has his own patriotic song, “Old Glory.” Check it out at his myspace, http://www.myspace.com/philstaceymusic . It is also available on iTunes. The original version is found on youtube, under the account of PhilnaticsDotCom . There are other links to the song as well. I and Phil’s other fans look forward to what else he will be doing in the future.
