Montgomery Gentry break down at Opry induction
by Brad on Jun.24, 2009, under Country music
Sure, you might think of Eddie Montgomery as that big ol’ moonshine-swillin’ Kentucky boy who kinda looks like the Hamburgler, with that hat an’ all, right?
But even moonshine swillers have a heart, and the larger half of Montgomery Gentry showed his at the duo’s Opry induction Tuesday night.
After Little Jimmy Dickens and Marty Stuart handled the official induction duties, it was time for Eddie to speak.
“I remember…” Eddie started, then tried to clear his throat of the sobs that started and wouldn’t go away.
“I remember sitting in an old junky station wagon, with my dad, listening to the Grand Ole Opry….” he said, pausing to wipe away tears, while the crowd cheered, encouraging him to continue.
“…And him going, ‘it didn’t matter what you do in country music, boy if you don’t play the Grand Ole Opry, become a Grand Ole Opry member, I’m telling you, you just ain’t got there yet.
“Uh, my daddy, he loved what it stood for and what it was about. And I promise you, me and T won’t let you down. And uh, omagosh, Dad…” Eddie said, clutching his Opry trophy and looking up, “we made it.”
The crowd exploded into cheers and applause.

Montgomery Gentry has put in their dues and did deserve the induction, but there are other artists that deserve it more. I argue that Toby Keith is the biggest artists alive not a member (over George Strait, Dixie Chicks, and Willie Nelson) that should be inducted on my website Stone Ln. That’s “it” about the Grand Ole Opry inductions…. for every artist that “should” be in there’s one that makes you ask “Wha’?”.
A big part of it is when The Opry gets on a roll and feels they HAVE to be inducting a certain genre. I agree, the past few have been worthy but Craig Morgan? Hal Ketchum (’90’s)?
Not to mention the artists that don’t respect the “rule” that you have to come play The Opry at least once a year… that list is too long to mention!

Not to mention they’ll induct some folks after only an album or two while others with great librarys of work are overlooked.
Oh well… whatever.
