Vince’s Kanye crack: Not an ‘ounce of ill will’
Vince Gill tells me he didn’t mean anything by it when he zinged Kanye West at the Grammys.
See Vince’s crack and his reaction by clicking HERE.
If you missed it, Ringo Starr handed Vince a trophy, for best country album, and Vince said: “I just got an award given to me by a Beatle. Have you had that happen yet, Kanye?”
The crowd went bonkers, and Kanye smiled.
Vince said it was a response to something Kanye said earlier in the show when Kanye won best rap album.
Vince and Kanye were both up for the all-genre album of the year Grammy, as were Amy Winehouse, The Foo Fighters and Herbie Hancock.
When Kanye won for rap album, he said, in part: “For (Winehouse producer) Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse, if I don’t get to get up here for album of the year, you deserve it just as much as me. I deserve it too.”
That didn’t sit too well with Vince.
“I felt like that kinda slammed me and Herbie and the Foo Fighters,” he said.
But Vince said he wasn’t stewing about it, and Vince’s retort was “off the cuff” and meant to be funny.
“I saw that he was laughing after I said it. So I was grateful I wasn’t gonna get my butt whupped,” he said, laughing.
Vince said he went to find Kanye at an after party to “hug his neck,” but they never found each other.
“There wasn’t an ounce of ill will,” Vince said.
‘People’ loves Carrie’s, Miley’s Grammy looks
In fact, Carrie Underwood was listed as one of the two hottest on the Grammys red carpet in People.com’s list of 13 “best dressed.”
The actual verbiage:
“See who rocked the red carpet (Carrie! Fergie!) at the 50th anniversary of music’s biggest award show.” (Yes, the Fergie of the Black-Eyed Peas.)
What did the Web site write about Carrie, pictured here in a photo by John Shearer/WireImage?
“The best female country vocal performance winner goes for high drama in her plunging floral Zuhair Murad, Mary Norton clutch and long blonde locks.”
Ooooo. Who doesn’t love a floral Zuhair Murad?
And most folks think one-time Middle Tennessean Miley Cyrus is looking like she’s beyond her mere 15 years of age.
Miley didn’t get a Grammy nom, but she was a presenter on the show.
The picture here was taken by John Shearer/Wire Images.
Writes People.com:
“The Hannah Montana star looks all grown up in her white sequined Celine dress and Sergio Rossi heels and clutch.
Carrie, Nashville Symphony score Grammys
So the Schermerhorn Symphony Center is world-class, right? Now, the orchestra playing inside is as well.
The Nashville Symphony picked up three Grammys Sunday night. This is particularly impressive, and surprising to some, because the symphony has only had two prior nominations before.
But this year, the symphony picked up trophies for each of three nominations for Made in America: Best orchestra song, best orchestra performance, best classical album.
The symphony issued a statement tonight: “It was an honor just to be nominated alongside such world-class ensembles, but to win in all three categories really says something about the artistic quality of our orchestra.”
Mazel tov!!
Other Nashville highlights:
Carrie Underwood – with a troupe from the show Stomp – killed in her performance of Before He Cheats, and she won best female country vocal performance for same. Before He Cheats also won best country song.
Keith Urban won best country male vocal performance for Stupid Boy.
Meanwhile, Nashville didn’t do so well in the all-genre categories.
Amy Winehouse, who won 75,000 Grammys, got the best new artist trophy, beating out Taylor Swift and Franklin pop-punk band Paramore.
Herbie Hancock got best album of the year, beating out Vince Gill, among others.
But Vince did get best line of the night after Ringo Starr handed him the best country album award.
“I just got an award given to me by a Beatle,” Vince said. “Have you had that happen yet, Kanye?”
