Seen in the City: Miley Cyrus surprise guest in Franklin

OMG! Fer real? lol!

Miley Cyrus dropped in unannounced on an outdoor skate festival/fund-raiser Sunday night at Jim Warren Park in Franklin.

This was the Alex LeVasseur Memorial Skate Festival, held in memory of Alex, who died last year at age 14 in an ATV accident. It was put on by his singer/songwriter dad, Jeffrey Steele, who also is a Nashville Star judge.

And as you know, Billy Ray Cyrus is the host of Nashville Star, so, voila!, surprise appearances by both Miley and Billy Ray.

Miley, with political correctness, sang two Jeffrey Steele songs, the first called Simple Song, which Miley apparently has recorded. The second is what she calls her favorite Jeffrey Steele song, Hollywood Girl, and she put Jeffrey on the spot and the two sang it together.

I’m told all the kids in the skate park rushed to the stage when they spotted Miley. Pandemonium on wheels!

By the way, Billy Ray sang — you guessed it — Achy Breaky Heart, and a cool version of Amazing Grace. How sweet the sound.

That's right, even George Jones gets star-struck

Hard to believe, isn’t it?

But when actor-turned-author Gene Hackman was in town earlier this week to sign his new Civil War book, the legendary George Jones couldn’t stay away.

George and Nancy went down to the Nashville downtown library just like the other fans.

And apparently the meet-and-greet didn’t last too long.

George got so nervous that his usual bottle-rattling deep voice escaped him, and he started practically squeaking.

Like a possum?

Cher came here just for the Merle Haggard show

Mystery solved: Turns out Cher is in town because one of her best L.A. buddies is a huge Merle Haggard fan, and Cher wanted to surprise her friend by taking him to the Hag show tonight.

Cher’s friend is jeweler-to-the-stars Richard Starks, creator of the Chrome Hearts line, for you fashionistas.

Cher booked a private jet and told Richard and his wife she had a surprise for them and they took off without Richard knowing where he was going.

Cher and Richard and their significant others spent significant time with Merle before the show. Then the Cher posse sat six rows back, center, for the actual Ryman show itself.

Other celebs in the house: Jewel and her bull-rider champ man, Ty Murray; country couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert; Gretchen Wilson; and John Anderson.

Gene Hackman is a little grumpy at the Nashville library

Gene Hackman (Hoosiers) has recently declared he is dropping the acting thing to be a full-time author. But it looks like he might enjoy writing the books better than pushing them.

Hackman was at the main downtown library this evening with Daniel Lenihan, his co-author on Civil War book Escape from Andersonville.

And dozens and dozens of fans showed, and many said they sensed Hackman was really ready to get out of there.

He seemed OK with autographing books, but Hackmans wasn’t thrilled about posing for pics. Hackman would keep his head down and say, “Count to three and then I’ll look up.”

Really?

To be fair, Hackman also had many charming moments as well.

But overall, he may have left some fans with a negative impression. Our photographer, Carlos, overheard one woman say to another, “He wasn’t very nice, was he?”

Cher, part 5: She takes in Bluebird songwriters show

If she could turn back time, Cher might’ve done some gigs at the famed Bluebird Cafe in Green Hills.

So maybe she was making up for lost time when she and her mystery boyfriend and another couple strolled into the late show Tuesday night before Cher’s now famous Tootsies’ stop. (Pictured here. See below.)

The biggest name on the bill: Former Bluebird chef-turned-singer/songwriter Kim Richey (Trisha Yearwood hit Baby I Lied.)

Cher and her posse got there about two minutes into the show, but people didn’t really react or realize it was Cher — at first.

Cher had sodas while her man had a Guinness beer. (Brilliant!) Cher didn’t seems to know any of the writers, but she looked like she was into it, and she stayed the whole time.

Cher did scoot out the second the show was over. Her man stood up and lead her out immediately, so no one got autographs or took pictures or harrassed her or any of that.

Unlike what happened at Tootsies….

Cher, part 4: Here's the waist-grabber warrant

So by now you know that Calvin Hutton Houghland, 36, of Page Road, whose mug shot is here, was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct after trying to get Cher’s attention when she was at Tootsies last night/this morning.

The officer on the scene told News 2’s Teresa Weakley this morning that Houghland grabbed Cher in “the hip area,” and a Metro Police report later said he “grabbed Cher by the waist.”

There was no assault warrant issued, in part because Cher didn’t want to press charges.

But the public intoxication warrant, taken out by Officer Christopher Horatio Brooks, is kinda interesting:

Subject was the suspect in an earlier assault at Tootsie’s 422 Broadway Ave. where victim refused prosecution. Subject was kicked out of the club and told to leave the area by me. Subject walked away to flag down a taxi. A few seconds later subject returned and I told him to leave or I would have to arrest him. Subject left then returned stating that he got assaulted so he wanted to go to jail. Subject was very intoxicated and admitted that he had drank 3 beers. Subject’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, speech slurred and an obvious odor of an alcoholic beverage. Subject took and failed a self-requested field sobriety task administered by officer Keith Johnson.

So why was Houghland sooooooooooooo intent on speaking with Cher?

Officers said Houghland insisted his stepfather worked with Cher when she was performing with now late ex-husband Sonny Bono.

Update: Overzealous Cher fan arrested outside Tootsies

As reported by my colleague/occasional gym buddy Teresa Weakley, Cher’s surprise visit to Tootsie’s ended in an arrest for one admirer.

Cher and a boyfriend type and a few other posse members were put in the VIP front-window booth when she got there before midnight. And staffers tried to keep other customers away.

But one guy, Calvin Houghland, apparently just wouldn’t leave Cher alone, Metro Police said. Officers said Houghland insisted his stepfather worked with Cher when she was performing with now late ex-husband Sonny Bono.

Houghland kept trying to talk to her, even grabbed for her, according to police, so Tootsie’s staffers bounced him out. But he is alleged to have come back to the Lower Broadway honky tonk, so police arrested him.

Officers asked Cher if she wanted to prosecute and she said no. Despite that, Houghland was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct. A judge ordered $3,000 bail.

I’m still not sure why Cher is in town, but I do know that she, her boyfriend type and another couple flew into Nashville on a private jet yesterday afternoon.

Seen in the City: Cher is hanging out at Tootsies!

Can you believe it?

I wouldn’t either except one of the fine News 2 photographers just got some video of Cher — yes, that Cher — hanging out at Tootsies, around 12:30 Wednesday morning.

I am told she had a posse, and the staff put her in the famed front window where Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson hung out together in happier times.

No idea yet why she’s here.

But I’m told she and her gang are being very low key.

More as I find out….

2 a.m. UPDATE

Cher wore a black lacy tank top, a short black jacket with white crosses on it, jeans with black crosses on them. In keeping with the cross theme, she also wore one on a necklace.

Drink of choice: Whiskey. Cher also drank some soda.

As of now, singer Jamey Johnson was on stage, but Cher had avoided doing any singing.

Tootsies’ staff have kept a five-foot buffer between customers and Cher/her posse.

Metro police showed up around 1:30 a.m., and Cher went out to talk to them for a second, but not sure why.

Nicole Kidman has Chicago sing 'Happy Birthday' to her

OK, we’ve found the baby bump.

You saw the Vogue pics of Nicole Kidman and went, “Uh, eight months pregnant? She’s soooooooo thin!”

Now there’s a video on YouTube where indeed, you can see a baby bump.

Keith Urban told 5,000 folks at Chicago’s Soldier Field Saturday night that Nicole had just had a birthday the day before.

“So it would be nice to have 50,000 people sing Happy Birthday to her,” Keith told the crowd, according to several different media sources.

Nicole, on the big screens, blew a kiss to the crowd.
