Rain won’t stop Fourth fireworks, but thunderstorms…? http://musiccitytv.com/2009/07/02/rain-wont-stop-fourth-fireworks-but-lightning/ http://musiccitytv.com/2009/07/02/rain-wont-stop-fourth-fireworks-but-lightning/#comments Thu, 02 Jul 2009 23:45:32 +0000 Brad http://musiccitytv.com/?p=2734 Yes, storms will hit Middle Tennessee on Saturday, though we don’t know exactly when.

But organizers of Nashville’s riverfront Fourth of July bash told me repeatedly today that the event is rain or shine. Only severe storms could wash out Music City’s biggest annual event.

“It has to be pretty bad for us not to be able to shoot fireworks,” said Deana Ivey of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau, which throws the bash.

If it’s raining, the show will go on. If it’s raining hard and/or storming, they might consider canceling the music, but continuing with the fireworks.

If’s it’s a bad, bad storm — like even Noah is hiding — they will postpone the fireworks for 30 minutes and then make the call.

Of course, the storms could miss us all together. We should know better tomorrow.

Here’s the sked:

6:45 p.m.: Former Mayor Richard Fulton will be on hand for a brief presentation to mark the 25th anniversary of the riverfront Fourth of July bash.

7 p.m.: Fisk Jubilee Singers do the anthem, and then, Nashville pop-rocker Gabe Dixon takes the big stage.

8 p.m.: Headliner Wynonna performs.

9 p.m.: The fireworks.

Did you know, for instance, that Jackson got an honorary degree from Fisk University’s then president, Dr. Henry Ponder (pictured here), an a star-studded United Negro College Fund dinner in New York?

Among those in attendance: Whitney Houston, who sang, Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor, Yoko Ono, and Christy Brinkley.

It was believed to be the only honorary degree that Jackson had received to that point.

Then-President Ronald Reagan send a videotaped message that said, among other things, “Let me be the first to call you the new Dr. J.”

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Hey everyone! Intern Justine here.

As we all know, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, passed away on June 25.

As the world mourns and remembers Michael, one Nashvillian shares her memories of when Michael and his brothers were in Nashville in 1981.

Lisa Byrd, now a Nashville realtor, recalls the memories of when the Jacksons’ came to Music City to mix music at the Quad Recording Studio on Music Row. She even had a picture of the brothers playing pool at the Quad, where she ran things then.

When asked about Michael, Lisa said that he was very nice — and that he did his own thing.

“Michael though spend two days in my office the whole time and on the phone with Brooke Shields, giggling and carrying on. They were big friends then,” says Lisa.

Another memory she remembers was Michael’s reaction to MTV, which was only three weeks old at the time.

“Michael stood up and said ‘we would never be involved with something this commercial,’ then probably two or three months after this visit, they were all over it,” says Lisa.

Not only were the Jacksons  here to mix tracks, but to perform their last Nashville concert at the Municipal Auditorium.

Michael Jackson’s country connections were odd http://musiccitytv.com/2009/06/25/michael-jacksons-country-connections-were-odd/ http://musiccitytv.com/2009/06/25/michael-jacksons-country-connections-were-odd/#comments Fri, 26 Jun 2009 01:33:53 +0000 Brad http://musiccitytv.com/?p=2676 Guess who took this picture of Michael Jackson and his famous monkee, Bubbles. OK, it might take a while, so I’ll tell ya.

It was Kenny Rogers, who met Michael at the 1985 star-studded We Are the World project that helped battle hunger in Africa. Kenny decided shortly afterward to do a photo book, Your Friends and Mine, and Michael and Bubbles, well, that was Kenny’s first pic for the project.

“Bubbles was so human it was almost frightening,” Kenny marveled.

More recently, Jackson’s publishing company bought a Sony/ATV country collection of some 55,000 titles, including Tennessee Waltz and Your Cheatin’ Heart, back in 2002.

And just last year, Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines said Michael Jackson showed up at her Halloween party. But most folks thought it was just some dude in a really good Michael Jackson costume.

My (mediocre) research shows Jackson never played here in Nashville, and several folks told me he may have never set foot in Music City. But Jackson and his brothers did play three nights in 1984 in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

I STAND CORRECTED:

Indeed I found out later last night that the Jacksons played several shows at Municipal Auditorium in the 1970s, as are documented in the comments below. We also had a phone interview on News 2 This Morning with Oak Ridge Boys’ William Lee Golden, who went to the last show in 1979. I’ll have that up soon.

AP: Michael Jackson has died http://musiccitytv.com/2009/06/25/abc-confirms-michael-jackson-has-died/ http://musiccitytv.com/2009/06/25/abc-confirms-michael-jackson-has-died/#comments Thu, 25 Jun 2009 22:23:07 +0000 Brad http://musiccitytv.com/?p=2669 LOS ANGELES (AP) - Michael Jackson, the sensationally gifted
“King of Pop” who emerged from childhood superstardom to become
the entertainment world’s most influential singer and dancer before
his life and career deteriorated in a freakish series of scandals,
died Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The
Associated Press. He was 50.
The person said Jackson died in a Los Angeles hospital. The
person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested
anonymity.
The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear.
Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department
paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30
p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics
performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda told the
newspaper.
Jackson’s death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre,
sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was
popular music’s premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and
white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the
charts and dazzled even more on stage.
His 1982 album “Thriller” - which included the blockbuster
hits “Beat It,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” - remains the
biggest-selling album of all time, with more than 26 million
copies.
He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation,
known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves, his
high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single
sequined glove and tight, military-style jacket were trademarks
second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.
As years went by, he became an increasingly freakish figure. His
skin became lighter and his nose narrower. He surrounded himself
with children at his Neverland ranch, often wore a germ mask while
traveling and kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his
closest companions.
In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old
cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying
the boy with alcohol and groping him. The case took a fearsome toll
on his career and image, and he fell into serious financial
trouble.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital as word of his
death spread. The emergency entrance at the UCLA Medical Center,
which is near Jackson’s rented home, was roped off with police
tape.
In New York’s Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd
when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began
relaying the news to friends by cell phone.
“No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow,” Michael Harris, 36, of
New York City, read from a text message a friend sent to his
telephone. “It’s like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always
remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died.”

The company, 821 Entertainment, is a partner in optioning the book, The Testament, and its principals will get exec producer credits for the movie.

This is big doings for the company, which to this point, has mostly placed music in movies.

The folks at 821 Entertainment — which include one-time Nashville Star judge Anastasia Brown, pictured here — hope this is the start of making them a big-time Hollywood player.

821 Entertainment is now involved with 16 films in the next five years, and those include the relaunch of the Roy Rogers franchise and a Nicolas Cage/50 Cent movie called The Dance.

So far, no plans to shoot anything in Nashville, but that could change soon. 821 Entertainment wants to build a multi-million-dollar movie studio at Nashville fairgrounds.

Not only did Mama Witherspoon go to opening night Tuesday of the five-night run there — She even made an appearance on stage at the end to present flowers to the cast.

Show star Laura Bell Bundy got big laughs with her line:

“I think all of us would like to thank the woman who gave birth to the woman who gave birth to Elle Woods!”

Professor Witherspoon told me afterward: “Well I thought it was a great movie, and I love the fact that they’ve made it into a show. I wanted to support Nashville and my family and all the fans.”

But even moonshine swillers have a heart, and the larger half of Montgomery Gentry showed his at the duo’s Opry induction Tuesday night.

After Little Jimmy Dickens and Marty Stuart handled the official induction duties, it was time for Eddie to speak.

“I remember…” Eddie started, then tried to clear his throat of the sobs that started and wouldn’t go away.

“I remember sitting in an old junky station wagon, with my dad, listening to the Grand Ole Opry….” he said, pausing to wipe away tears, while the crowd cheered, encouraging him to continue.

“…And him going, ‘it didn’t matter what you do in country music, boy if you don’t play the Grand Ole Opry, become a Grand Ole Opry member, I’m telling you, you just ain’t got there yet.

“Uh, my daddy, he loved what it stood for and what it was about. And I promise you, me and T won’t let you down. And uh, omagosh, Dad…” Eddie said, clutching his Opry trophy and looking up, “we made it.”

The crowd exploded into cheers and applause.

Lauren Conrad signs book, ‘L.A. Candy’, in Nashville http://musiccitytv.com/2009/06/23/lauren-conrad-signs-book-la-candy-in-nashville/ http://musiccitytv.com/2009/06/23/lauren-conrad-signs-book-la-candy-in-nashville/#comments Wed, 24 Jun 2009 01:07:51 +0000 Chelsea http://musiccitytv.com/?p=2633 lauren-conrad-book-la-candyWhats up!! Intern Chelsea here…back from my first interview :) And it was with Lauren Conrad!

She was signing her book, L.A. Candy, today at Davis-Kidd in Green Hills and my goodness…there was a lot of people there. When we got there, people were wrapped around the store, and the general manager even told us that people had been there since about 9:30 a.m. so, lots of Conrad fans there today.

Also, before she came to the book signing, she was spotted at SATCO eating, but she says she hasn’t been in Nashville long. She says she just flew in today and she was leaving after the signing.

So if you haven’t bought her book, you probably think the book is just like her reality TV show

But Lauren says, “There are a lot of similarities as far as emotional things you go through and the first time, things like going on an interview for the show, the first red carpet your on, just things like that, are on there but there are no like specific events that i took directly from my life and stuck into the book.”

Lauren says her book is “a fictional novel about a girl who moves to L.A. and gets on a reality TV show and kinda goes from there and all the things she goes through and it’s kind of a behind the scenes look at anyone on a reality TV show.”

Lauren says she started outlining the book about a year ago, and as a matter of fact, she says shes working on her second book right now.

Also, when we asked her about all the fans at the book signings, she said, “It’s flattering, it’s really cool.” She says the people are always so nice to her. She also says that the most interesting thing to her is, “People in every state are really different, so that’s really cool.”
